HubSpot – Great Company Review

Hubspot

HubSpot is an inbound marketing and sales software company whose aim is to help small businesses to escalate quickly through new strategies that attract visitors and turn them into potential customers. This company is on the Glassdoor list of the Best Places to Work in 2018 and it has been awarded as one of the best workplaces for Millennials in the last two years. Even though this company was in the eye of the storm after the release of the book “Disrupted” by Dan Lyons, employees agree that HubSpot is an excellent place to work and they show it proudly on the internet.

A place to Start and Boost your Career

For young people finding a job is really hard, but HubSpot gives them the opportunity to start. From the beginning, this company provides the necessary tools to the employees so they can work on their own, and sometimes people learn more from this training than from many years of college education. They also understand the people’s desire of growing in their career, even if this process occurs in another company.

People with “HEART”

The academic record is important when it comes to hiring people, but at HubSpot your ability to share knowledge and work in a team is also important. So, the hiring process is a little bit unconventional. They focus on qualitative tests on character rather than brainteasers to have an insight into your personality. The company is looking for employees with HEART. This is an acronym for humble, effective, adaptable, remarkable, and transparent; these qualities are the foundation of HubSpot.

Time: The Best Reward

At HubSpot your effort is rewarded with something better than pay: Time. They don’t only offer flexible schedules and work from home, you can add unlimited paid time off, vacation, sabbatical and sick leave to the list of perks. If this is not enough, this company has on-site amenities including fitness center, nutrition consultation, nap room, nursing rooms, access to free food and the list goes on.

A Supportive and Inclusive Company

HubSpot is committed to promoting diversity. Here you are accepted regardless of age, gender identity, race, sexual orientation, ability, or nationality. Programs like Women@HubSpot, People of Color at Hubspot (POCaH) and LGBTQ alliance are initiatives that empower employees and create safer and more comfortable work spaces. These programs include meetings, workshops, training, and networking events as well. The company also supports parenting so they promote activities like “Bring your kids to work day” or programs like ParenSpot.

Why work at HubSpot?

This company is everything that a “newbie” wants: it offers a friendly environment, it is inclusive, it has the aim to help other people grow (clients and employees), and it gives you the opportunity to start a career and receive training. HubSpot is also a great option for people with experience in the field who want to leave their comfort zone.

The Creepy Boss

Creepy Boss

You just arrived at your workplace and the most important thing on your mind is doing a good job. However, you got approached by your creepy boss who places his hand on your shoulder, or around your waist. His physical contact causes you to feel uncomfortable (this is often considered harassment). Any action that makes one uncomfortable, such as flirting and inappropriate touching, are termed as harassment.

Being aware of what is considered harassment allows you the opportunity to prevent, or put a stop to, such an act.

Below are signs that you have a creepy boss.

Asking for Late Night or Private Meetings

If you are always singled out to attend private or late-night meetings, this means that your boss is going beyond the professional limit. If you comply with these requests, even when they make you uncomfortable, you’re only making things worse for yourself. Your boss may even go as far as to ask you out for drinks or dinner privately. Let your boss know firmly that you’d prefer to conduct business during working hours at the office. This way you will not be alone with the boss, or caught in an uncomfortable situation. This also ensures that there are other people around to deter your boss’s attempts.

Receiving Calls or Texts from your Boss for No Reason

It is definitely necessary at times for the boss to be in contact with their staff after hours. However, if you are receiving late night or weekend calls that have nothing to do with your work, this might be inappropriate. Ask yourself if your boss is trying to use that opportunity to flirt with you when off the clock. There is nothing wrong with having a working relationship with your boss, however, some bosses go to far if they cross the line by making an attempt on their staff to gain their affection in an appropriate advance that is not work related.

Workplace h

The best way to handle an after hours advance is to let your boss know politely that you are busy with family time. If you are married, you might make it known by bringing family pictures to the office and wearing your wedding ring. This may help your boss to deter their behavior. Even if you’re not married, you can display a photo of your significant other and it always helps to be clear about your distaste about the requests.

Displaying of Sensual or Playful Body Language

Check the eye contact and body language of your boss. If you catch him casting glances at you which you aren’t uncomfortable with, that could be the sign. Do not reciprocate these behaviors because if you do, you’re letting the boss know that his behavior is OK. Instead, be mindful of your own body language and eye contact so that it is not taken the wrong way.

Spending more Time in Your Office than His Own

If your office looks very relaxed, that doesn’t mean that your boss should be moving to and fro in order for him to flirt with you. He was assigned his own office! By always spending his time with you in your office, he is exerting his authority to move closer to you, which is not appropriate. In the same token, when you visit your boss’s office, keep your interactions business professional by first knocking and then when you enter, keep your conversations short and to the point. Ensure that you are not standing or sitting in a casual way. Exit as soon as you have what you need.

He Gives you Gifts and Asks for Secrets

During the Holiday or Valentine celebration, your boss gives all the staff a motivational gift but yours is special with a flirtatious quote. This is part of the attitude displayed by a creepy boss who shows that he wants to get closer to you. One way to deter your boss is to respectfully decline the gift by saying, “Thank you but I cannot accept this gift”. If your boss asked you to keep it a secret, respond by saying, “I do not feel comfortable with that”. If you hold your ground, your boss will stop giving you special gift, and requests for secrets. He may also respect you more by showing that you have morals and integrity.

Negative Effects of A Creepy Boss

Working under a creepy boss has a lot of negative effects, such as anxiety, embarrassment, headaches, depression and fear. This may lead to poor performance evaluations, change in career goals, absenteeism, or even getting sacked from your job. If you believe that your boss is harassing you, the best thing is to confront him directly. For example, you can approach him and say, “Sir, I don’t feel comfortable with you putting your arm around my waist or on my shoulder.” Don’t appear timid while confronting him. This is going to stop the harassment. However, if this does not work, you may need to report him to your company’s HR department so that further investigation and action can be taken. It is possible that he has done this to other employees, so by speaking up, you could be helping others who have dealt with the same situation.

Disclaimer: Dealing with a creepy boss is stressful. If you are a boss, recognize your work behaviors and take note that your actions could be making others feel uncomfortable. A work environment is not the correct place to make advances.

The Rumpelstiltskin Boss

The Rumpelstiltskin Boss

If you are a lover of fairy-tale stories, you may have heard about a man named Rumpelstiltskin. Here goes the story….

The story was about the beautiful daughter of a poor miller. The poor miller visits the king and lies to him that his beautiful daughter. He tells the king that she has the ability of turning straw into gold.

The king, in turn, requests for the daughter’s presence. He takes her into a room full of straw, provides her a spinning wheel, and asks her to turn the straw into gold. She has to complete the task by daybreak or she will be put to death. The poor miller’s daughter was left alone in the room with no idea on how to spin the straw into gold. She began to feel afraid and started crying.

Suddenly the door opened and there stood a little man greeting the poor girl. He asked her the reason behind her tears. The girl told him that she needed to spin the straw into gold, before daybreak, or she would surely be put to death by the king. The little man said that he will help her, but he wanted to get something in return. The girl offered him her necklace, and he started to work, until all straw were spun into gold.

When the king appeared in the morning, he was full of surprise and happiness. But he became more greedy and ask the girl to do the same thing in another room with more straw, and threatened to kill her again if its not done. The little man came as usual with the girl offering her ring to him in return for his help, whirr, whirr, whirr, all the straws were turned into gold.

On the third day, the king came as usual, full of happiness, but still greedy. He offered the girl another straw room bigger than the previous two, with the promise that she will become the queen if she manages to turn all the straw into gold.

The girl sat down full of sadness unable to do anything to the straw. There came the little man again, but this time she had nothing left to offer him. The little man requested for her unborn first child in return for his work. Unable to find another option, the girl agreed and all the straw were turned to gold.

Years later, after becoming the queen, she gave birth to her first child. One night, the little man visited the queen and asked her to fulfill the promise that she made. The queen became frightened and offered him all the riches in the kingdom, but he was adamant. However, he promised to leave her alone for good if she managed to tell him his name within three days.

The queen pondered and inquired from people throughout the kingdom about the little man, but none was able to offer any meaningful response. Then one day, a messenger reported back to her relating an experience that he had about a little man singing, “Tonight tonight, my plans I make, tomorrow tomorrow the baby I take. The queen will never win the game, for Rumpelstiltskin is my name.”

The queen was very happy when she heard the lyrics. So when the little man came on the third day, she told him his name (Rumpelstiltskin). He became dejected and angry, which caused him to tear himself into two.

Who is a Rumpelstiltskin Boss?

The role of the little man from the above story depicts the character of a Rumpelstiltskin boss. These types of managers are self-centered with an egoistical nature. Although its not a bad thing to be proud of one’s achievement, which is the result of hard work, they take it to another level by being uncaring of other’s best interests.

The Rumpelstiltskin boss needs to recognize and appreciate the efforts of his staff that make the project a successful one. Praising himself in the presence of his staffs will surely hurt their feelings, which can lead to a withdrawn and unproductive workforce.

Fortunately, there are ways to stand up for yourself as an employee to avoid getting trampled upon by Rumpelstiltskin bosses in their quests for recognition.

Understand your Boss’s Weakness and Take Advantage

If your boss has a Rumpelstiltskin character, then you need to always be ahead of him. Use your instinct to determine his vulnerabilities regarding his job. Who knows, your boss might be the type that gets easily disturbed after making an error.

Make your Boss Realize the Effect of His or Her Behavior

If your self-seeking boss raised her voice at any of the staffs within the department, please don’t react in a negative way. Speak in a calm voice and make him realize the impression that his actions will have on the staff.

Maybe the staff are planning to change jobs because of his outbursts. If you get wind of this, your boss may benefit from knowing so that he can make some needed adjustments in his behavior.

Make a Plan and Execute it

If you have been working overtime and you are at the risk of loosing your health, quickly make a plan! Instead of working overtime everyday including weekends, set some limits. Check your wrist watch and explain to your boss about your own personal commitments. Many people have family obligations or perhaps a dog that needs to be walked.

Although he should be able to consider that your health comes first.

Create a Good Working Relationship with your Fellow Coworkers

If your boss desires all the credit of the successful projects, make him realize the importance of having a good working relationship with others by sharing accomplishment with fellow staff.

For example, show him the emails that you send to each staff praising their contributions. He should see their positive response, which will make him reflect and change his selfish ways.

Some managers always turn a blind eye to the needs of their staff. If your boss is the Rumpelstiltskin type with an egoistical nature, and that affects your work performance and contribution, you definitely need a change of job.

However, if you can overlook your manager’s personality flaws, or if they can be tamed with the possibility of developing a better character, take up the challenge and succeed in your work.
