Let’s face the reality. Many people are engaged with their dream job but their bosses aren’t inspiring.

Lack of motivation from your boss can lead to physical discomfort and depression. Although, your boss has more influence on how you engage yourself at work. However, you can still be in the driver’s seat so as to have a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment.

So, if your boss is not giving you the motivation, you deserve, below are few and simple strategies you can implement that allows you to make positive progress in your every day life while working for an uninspiring boss.

Determine your goals

Having a target goal is very important for your personal development. Develop a career plan that will help you keep tab on your project and goals. Although, some of the goals might be related to your present job, while others may be aimed towards educating yourself on area of interests different from your job demands. Also, avoid setting a bigger goal as it could be counter productive. Instead, break the bigger goal into smaller goals and take one step at a time so you can celebrate your achievement per each step on your way up.

Remind yourself what you like about the job

It’s been a while that you are with your current job. You might have forgotten what attracts you to the job in the first place. So, always remind yourself about what you like about the job. Why did you apply for it? What are the satisfactions that you derive from the job?

You can also consider the things you dislike about the job. Is it your colleague at work? Perhaps, you feel like you aren’t making any progress, or the job demands too many responsibilities? Try and find ways to make changes. Maybe you will perform excellently with another team, or you want a different role. Perhaps, your fellow workers are not as bad as you perceived. Or you want to be promoted? Let your boss know you deserve it by delivering excellent performances, dishing out ideas that will make your company exceed its competitors and get more customers.

Understand what keeps you going

If your boss doesn’t appreciate or motivate you, then it’s important to find out what keeps you going as a person and professional. Is it your love for the work? Or does the desire to receive recognition motivate you? Ask yourself, what was the last time you felt purposeful and motivated at work? So, then you will understand the conditions that make you flourish and implement them.

Assess your performances and ask for people’s feedback

One of the way’s bad bosses hinders motivation is by not giving adequate feedback. Although, most managers are ready to give feedback when asked. You can request for feedback by asking questions like, “What is your thought about the meeting we just had?”, “Is there anything you will want me to do in a different way next time?” You can also give a critical look into your work by asking yourself questions that you would ask others when evaluating their work.

Keep on learning

Make sure you set out a time to read daily. Read for a minimum of one hour in the morning before others wake up. You can start with 20 minutes a day, so as not to be overwhelmed, and do it for a month. Know that reading and learning is the quickest way to success. This will make it easy, full of fun, and rewarding as it would create motivation and success for you.

Finally

Many times, there is lack of motivation at work, but by implementing the above motivational strategies, you can begin each day with a feeling of excitement and desire to forge a great career regardless of your uninspiring boss.

The American Psychiatric Association (APA) has diagnosed Darth Vader with a Borderline Personality Disorder. So, if you want to be a boss, who is perceived as Darth Vader, what does that mean for you?

Be UNSTABLE and IMPULSIVE… To become a Darth Vader boss, you must adopt the mentality of an unstable and impulsive teenager. Just like Darth Vader ordered his men to “tear the ship apart”, you might yell at your staff to start the project all over!! This is NOT what YOU had in mind!!! You should not tolerate any mistakes by your staff so that no errors are made.

Be ANGRY… Any bad news, or set backs, will be responded to with severe punishment, like yelling at your staff in front of a large meeting, or public firings.  Fly off the chain at every little thing that may make you angry. The point here is to make an individual employee feel small and stupid for their error so that everyone will see them as an example of what not to do.

Be FEARFUL and STRONG… The result of your behavior will cultivate FEAR in the office that will, in turn, control everyone.  No one should be making decisions on their own! Make your people ask you before they do ANYTHING! You are the boss, the project manager, and the ultimate decider. The buck stops here! Show your STRENGTH with intensity. If something happens to go well, it was definitely your idea.

Be EMOTIONALLY UNAVAILABLE… As a Darth Vader boss, nearly everyone in the office should know that you have an estranged relationship with your family and spouse. You are possibly feeling abandoned because they don’t agree at how you’ve turned out. Maybe you work too many hours and are focused more on work than building personal relationships. Vader also had an unstable viewpoint of his Jedi masters. So, you will have a shaky relationship with your superiors and/or mentors at work too.

Be SECRETIVE and MYSTERIOUS… Keep your identity secret from everyone. Your outer appearance should be of strength and power! However, deep down you have a tender heart and are just trying to overcome some very personal losses. Darth Vader had lost his mother, and later his wife. Regardless of what you have lost, you are depressed. Therefore, you’re afraid to be found out. So this will only intensify your need to conceal your identity.

In the end, you will find yourself as an unstable, intense, estranged, angry, and secretive Darth Vader boss. You will be perceived as the meanest, most intimidating, and mysterious boss EVER!

Note by entire staff is placed on the closed shop entrance expressing their concerns that humanity seems to be in short supply with this bad boss (the District Manager):

“Dear Jamie,

Since you decided to say “cancer is not an excuse” and think it’s ok to swear at your employees like you do ALL the time… WE QUIT. *THIS is why you can’t keep a store manager longer than a year. YOU ABUSE your roll AND staff. ENJOY the fact that you lost a store manager, co-manager, and key holder in the middle of Back to School. THINK next time you treat people the way you do.

WE AREN’T ALLOWING IT ANYMORE.

According to a first hand account, there were two stores involved in this dispute, both with employees dealing with issues about cancer (either by family or personally). At the first store, in another local mall, the District Manager set a rule that all the managers and co-managers had to work open to close all week. They would get one day off, which the District Managers got to choose. One manager at the other store had cancer and her chemo treatment appointments were set up ahead of time; but her 40 hours for that week were already set. The District Manager told her to change her hours but, given that her appointments were set, she couldn’t change her schedule.

This is when the District Manager responded “cancer isn’t an excuse”. At the second store (this particular one above), one manager received the same call about hours and an employee whose mom has cancer had the same problem. She needed the time off to driver her mom to chemo appointments but when requesting the time off, she received the same answer that the manager at the other store experienced, “cancer isn’t an excuse”.

The employees were fed up with being treated like this so the managers, co-managers, and key holders at both stores just quit right on the spot. There’s obviously more details to the story, but apparently the issue with cancer and missing chemo treatments was enough to set this group off.

W. Neil Berrett gave his two week’s notice of his intent to resign on a cake. The letter was written in frosting on a full sheet sized cake. Berrett says the cake was delicious and it was well received.

The resignation letter reads…

“Dear Mr. Bowers,

During the past three years, my tenure at the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard has been nothing short of pure excitement, joy and whim.

However, I have decided to spend more time with my family and attend to health issues that have recently arisen. I am proud to have been part of such an outstanding team and I wish this organization only the finest in future endeavors.

Please accept this cake as notification that I am leaving my position with NWT on March 27.

Sincerely,

W. Neil berrett”
