The Rumpelstiltskin Boss

The Rumpelstiltskin Boss

If you are a lover of fairy-tale stories, you may have heard about a man named Rumpelstiltskin. Here goes the story….

The story was about the beautiful daughter of a poor miller. The poor miller visits the king and lies to him that his beautiful daughter. He tells the king that she has the ability of turning straw into gold.

The king, in turn, requests for the daughter’s presence. He takes her into a room full of straw, provides her a spinning wheel, and asks her to turn the straw into gold. She has to complete the task by daybreak or she will be put to death. The poor miller’s daughter was left alone in the room with no idea on how to spin the straw into gold. She began to feel afraid and started crying.

Suddenly the door opened and there stood a little man greeting the poor girl. He asked her the reason behind her tears. The girl told him that she needed to spin the straw into gold, before daybreak, or she would surely be put to death by the king. The little man said that he will help her, but he wanted to get something in return. The girl offered him her necklace, and he started to work, until all straw were spun into gold.

When the king appeared in the morning, he was full of surprise and happiness. But he became more greedy and ask the girl to do the same thing in another room with more straw, and threatened to kill her again if its not done. The little man came as usual with the girl offering her ring to him in return for his help, whirr, whirr, whirr, all the straws were turned into gold.

On the third day, the king came as usual, full of happiness, but still greedy. He offered the girl another straw room bigger than the previous two, with the promise that she will become the queen if she manages to turn all the straw into gold.

The girl sat down full of sadness unable to do anything to the straw. There came the little man again, but this time she had nothing left to offer him. The little man requested for her unborn first child in return for his work. Unable to find another option, the girl agreed and all the straw were turned to gold.

Years later, after becoming the queen, she gave birth to her first child. One night, the little man visited the queen and asked her to fulfill the promise that she made. The queen became frightened and offered him all the riches in the kingdom, but he was adamant. However, he promised to leave her alone for good if she managed to tell him his name within three days.

The queen pondered and inquired from people throughout the kingdom about the little man, but none was able to offer any meaningful response. Then one day, a messenger reported back to her relating an experience that he had about a little man singing, “Tonight tonight, my plans I make, tomorrow tomorrow the baby I take. The queen will never win the game, for Rumpelstiltskin is my name.”

The queen was very happy when she heard the lyrics. So when the little man came on the third day, she told him his name (Rumpelstiltskin). He became dejected and angry, which caused him to tear himself into two.

Who is a Rumpelstiltskin Boss?

The role of the little man from the above story depicts the character of a Rumpelstiltskin boss. These types of managers are self-centered with an egoistical nature. Although its not a bad thing to be proud of one’s achievement, which is the result of hard work, they take it to another level by being uncaring of other’s best interests.

The Rumpelstiltskin boss needs to recognize and appreciate the efforts of his staff that make the project a successful one. Praising himself in the presence of his staffs will surely hurt their feelings, which can lead to a withdrawn and unproductive workforce.

Fortunately, there are ways to stand up for yourself as an employee to avoid getting trampled upon by Rumpelstiltskin bosses in their quests for recognition.

Understand your Boss’s Weakness and Take Advantage

If your boss has a Rumpelstiltskin character, then you need to always be ahead of him. Use your instinct to determine his vulnerabilities regarding his job. Who knows, your boss might be the type that gets easily disturbed after making an error.

Make your Boss Realize the Effect of His or Her Behavior

If your self-seeking boss raised her voice at any of the staffs within the department, please don’t react in a negative way. Speak in a calm voice and make him realize the impression that his actions will have on the staff.

Maybe the staff are planning to change jobs because of his outbursts. If you get wind of this, your boss may benefit from knowing so that he can make some needed adjustments in his behavior.

Make a Plan and Execute it

If you have been working overtime and you are at the risk of loosing your health, quickly make a plan! Instead of working overtime everyday including weekends, set some limits. Check your wrist watch and explain to your boss about your own personal commitments. Many people have family obligations or perhaps a dog that needs to be walked.

Although he should be able to consider that your health comes first.

Create a Good Working Relationship with your Fellow Coworkers

If your boss desires all the credit of the successful projects, make him realize the importance of having a good working relationship with others by sharing accomplishment with fellow staff.

For example, show him the emails that you send to each staff praising their contributions. He should see their positive response, which will make him reflect and change his selfish ways.

Some managers always turn a blind eye to the needs of their staff. If your boss is the Rumpelstiltskin type with an egoistical nature, and that affects your work performance and contribution, you definitely need a change of job.

However, if you can overlook your manager’s personality flaws, or if they can be tamed with the possibility of developing a better character, take up the challenge and succeed in your work.

The Bumbler Boss

The Bumbler Boss

Any employee in an organization is generally looking forward to meeting their new boss. In most cases, you believe that this new boss will aid in your development in becoming an expert in your chosen career.

Unfortunately, there are many managers that aren’t qualified for their position but still manage to get promoted and hold on to it. These types of managers are incompetent and cannot even manage their own household for that matter. Therefore, they should not be in charge of a multi-million dollar department, or company, which makes them a Bumbler Bosses.

So, how do you know if your manager is the Bumbler type? The below tips will help you in recognizing the traits of an incompetent boss.

Too lazy to Handle Projects

If your manager always finds his or her work too cumbersome or constantly turns out late assignments, or he doesn’t even at all, then your boss is a bumbler’s type. Competent managers always handle their projects effectively while also giving their staffs the needed support and advise without complain!

Of course, we are all human and there could be an occasional late assignment due to unforeseen circumstances, we’re referring to a bumbler type as someone is does this as a habit.

Always Employing Consultants

The Bumbler boss’s way of putting off decision making is by delegating their projects to their subordinates. Some Bumblers even will go as far as hiring a consultant in order to avoid making decisions on their own.

After the consultant options are presented, a debate may follow that takes hours, days, or months. However, the company becomes poorer due to the hiring fee. When the consultants leave, the Bumbler boss is left considerably behind in their assignments again.

He or She is Highly Secretive

Is your manager the type that always hides information from the staff? These type of managers hold the view that their staff will be confused or distracted from their work.

However, any manager that has this trait is surely afraid of being challenged by his or her staff. Bumbler bosses would rather defend their position, rather than facing challenges that will move the company forward.

Always Avoiding Responsibilities

If your manager always has his door closed, or an excuse to cancel your one-on-one, or the scheduled department meeting, even when it’s important, then your boss is surely incompetent.

A competent manager must always be available to the staff, whether for a clear explanation about an assignment or to give positive feedback on work done by employees.

Having a Bumbler as a manager doesn’t mean your career is doomed! Don’t be so eager in looking for a new job in your bid to escape the incompetency of your boss. There is much to gain from working for a Bumbler boss. Try to adjust to his or her demands, and overlook your Bubmler boss’s failings. This could serve as a blessing in disguise in the future.

The Demotivating Boss

How to Be a Demotivating Boss

Many organizations shower appreciation towards their staff by giving them a reward, with the hope of keeping them motivated and working harder. But, it often backfires, sometimes leading to a lack of morale and lowered productivity.

Some of the best employees often develop the mental attitude that leads them to believe that the manager’s help is not needed.

So as a boss looking to have complete authority and control, you need to demotivate your staff and make them feel of no value to the company. What are the characteristics of a demotivating boss and how do you implement them? Continue below…

Make promises and Don’t Fulfill Them

When a boss makes a promise that is not fulfilled, that can definitely cause employees to feel demotivated. One way to accomplish this is to promise your staff a bonus that won’t be paid to them. Or, you could suggest to your workers that you will host a party to honor them for their hard work, but then back out and order some snacks for the celebration instead. This will surely make them feel cheated.

Be a Threat to The Staff

Next, you should implement a rigid approach towards your staff by striking fear into their hearts. Always threaten your staff with penalties that will force them to work harder.  Examples of penalties could include: withdrawal of benefits, cancelling of vacations, criticism, demotion, blame, etc. Any of these items will lead to a frustrated staff but they might work harder to avoid your wrath going forward.

Don’t allow them to do things without your approval

Avoid giving your staff the freedom to do their job in different ways. Adopt the mentality, “If it’s not broken, don’t fix it” or “We’ve done it this way for years so we’re not going to change it now”. Rather than listening to your employees ideas for improvement, ask them to do things according to your rules. Outline their daily tasks with a to-do list of things that need to be done, the only ways to do those tasks, and the required amount of time to accomplish those tasks. Always make sure they do things with your approval.

This is an important part of your quality as a demotivating boss because, in your mind, it will definitely ensure that the employees always need your help.

Always keep an eye on them

Watch every move of your employees by having regular meetings to keep up with their performance. Get them to submit daily and weekly project list that will help you have a full knowledge of what has been done by the staffs. Where this might be a normal task of a typical manager, where you will take this to another notch, as the demotivating boss, keeping a watchful eye also means that you will pop up at any minute behind their shoulders and literally watch them work.

The above tips will help the staff to step up their performance as no employees like to be kept under a watchful eye.

Deny them support and guidance

Turn a blind eye to your employee’s problem by allowing it to grow. Don’t even admit to the existence of their problems. With this, your staff will feel betrayed and demotivated. If an employee comes to your office with a personal problem, tell them to get back to work. They are wasting yours and the company’s time. Is their computer equipment or telephone system outdated, slow, or experiencing glitches? That’s not in your budget so ask them to continue working and stop complaining.

Treat all the staffs equally

By giving equal treatment to the staff, you are pointing out to the hard-working employees that their performance is not worth more than the under performing staff. With this attitude, your top performers will become demotivated and fall at the level of the other employees.

The motive behind your behavior is because you fear that your superiors will take notice of these high performing individuals and seek to replace you. Your hopes is that they will fall in line with the other mediocre performers, and if not, at least the high performers will be so demotivated that they will leave the organization.

Finally, What Happens to your Staff when you are a Demotivating Boss?

By implementing the above tips, you will have a demoralized, full of grievance, and demotivated staff. The employees will have lost trust in you, as well as the organization that they work for. They will question their every move, feel confused, and hopeless, which will definitely show down progress. If you hear some mumbling among the employees, it’s surely to be about their fear of questioning you about anything.

Without support for their problems or equipment nothing will be brought to your attention or resolved, because from past experiences, you’ve done nothing to help. High performers will be the first to leave the organization, and in a short period of time, perhaps all the staff will have left to seek better opportunities.
